For a project marked as “abandoned” this Necron one is getting a fair bit of love. In fact, this is my only modelling related post this year. So much for my grand ambitions for 2025.
Kind of like the previous Necron paint job, this one struck me all of a sudden with a “I can finish this in a day or two” sort of thought process. I was in a period of hobby inspiration working on a Trench Crusade related project that will appear on the blog soon, and while waiting for various kitbashes to dry I decided it would be nice to paint something fairly quick to get back into the swing of things. Absurdley, the last time I painted anything was well over a year ago in July 2024.
These immortals were already well underway from my past life attempting to create a whole army. Legs and one arm were done, and heads, torso and the other arm and gun were in varous states. I essentially needed to layer some blue-white gradients, block in the red primer and metallic parts, apply chipping with a sponge, washes and rust.
I’m definitely noticing that my standard painting method is getting more and more impressionistic. I’m making a a lot of wet in wet and “reductive” painting – a fancy term for wiping paint (usually washes) off after application. The chipping and glow effects look pretty shonky up close but make a good effect at a distance.
I love these models. They’re super cheesey in a way but no denying they have a menacing aura and I enjoyed posing them. I can’t decide if my favourite is the one at rest hefting his giant cannon, one of the ones advancing and mercilessly gunning down the enemy mercillessly , or the one mid-recoil.
I pre-ordered the Death Watch and Necron Kill Team set a while ago and this little project will set me in good stead for completing the Necron terrain and models in it – and in the process I should end up with a reasonable little Necron force.
